Ingredients

For the Sauce
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1/4 cup reduced sodium soy sauce
  • 2 teaspoons sesame oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon crushed red-pepper flakes or more to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
For the Beef
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 2 whole green onions, thinly sliced divided for cooking and garnish
  • 1/4 teaspoon sesame seeds for garnish

Equipment

  • Small bowl
  • Large Cast Iron Skillet

Method

  1. In a small bowl, whisk together the brown sugar, soy sauce, sesame oil, red pepper flakes, and ginger to make the sauce mixture.
  2. Heat the vegetable oil in a large cast iron skillet over medium high heat. Add the minced garlic and cook, stirring constantly, until it smells fragrant, about 1 minute.
  3. Add the ground beef to the skillet. Cook until browned, about 3 to 5 minutes, breaking up the beef as it cooks. Drain any excess fat from the skillet.
  4. Stir in the prepared soy sauce mixture and half of the sliced green onions until everything is combined. Let the mixture simmer until it is heated through, about 2 minutes.
  5. Serve the beef immediately over rice. Garnish with the remaining green onion slices and sesame seeds if you wish.

Notes

This meal transforms a busy weeknight. When I first made this, my children enjoyed the new flavors immediately. Serving this over rice makes it a complete and balanced meal for your family.
