Ingredients

Sandwich Base
  • 1 package (12 ounces) Hawaiian sweet rolls
  • 1/2 cup horseradish sauce
  • 3/4 pound sliced deli ham
  • 6 Swiss cheese slices, halved
Onion Butter Glaze
  • 1/2 cup butter, cubed
  • 2 tablespoons finely chopped onion
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon spicy brown mustard
  • 2 teaspoons poppy seeds
  • 1-1/2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder

Equipment

  • 9x9 inch baking pan
  • Small skillet

Method

  1. Cut the rolls in half horizontally without separating them. Place the bottom halves of the rolls into a greased 9x9-inch baking pan.
  2. Spread the horseradish sauce onto the cut side of the roll bottoms. Layer the ham and cheese on top, then place the top half of the rolls back on.
  3. Heat the butter in a small skillet over medium-high heat. Add the onion and cook, stirring, until it becomes tender, which takes 1 to 2 minutes.
  4. Stir the brown sugar, mustard, poppy seeds, Worcestershire sauce, and garlic powder into the melted butter mixture.
  5. Pour the butter mixture evenly over the tops of the rolls. Cover the pan and refrigerate for several hours or overnight.
  6. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F. Take the rolls out of the refrigerator 30 minutes before you plan to bake them.
  7. Bake the rolls covered for 25 minutes. Remove the cover and bake for an additional 5 to 10 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown.

Notes

This recipe is designed for quick assembly. Allowing the rolls to rest in the refrigerator lets the glaze soak into the bread, improving the final texture and flavor.
