Ingredients

For the Waffles
  • 1 1/4 cup flour
  • 1 1/4 cup milk room temperature
  • 1 egg, large
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
For Decoration
  • 1 ounce chocolate bar or chocolate syrup

Equipment

  • skillet or non stick pan
  • 16 ounce squeeze bottle
  • toothpicks or a ziploc bag

Method

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Mix well.
  2. In a separate bowl, combine butter and milk. Microwave on high for 30 seconds, or until butter is melted.
  3. Add the warmed milk mixture and the egg to the dry ingredients. Whisk until well combined and most clumps are broken up.
  4. Pour the batter into the squeeze bottle.
  5. Heat a skillet to 200 degrees Fahrenheit (or medium heat on stovetop). Draw the outline of a ghost and fill in the body with batter.
  6. Cook for 2 to 3 minutes on each side. Repeat with the remaining batter.
  7. If using a chocolate bar or chips, microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring between each, until melted.
  8. Use toothpicks to draw spooky faces on the waffles. Alternatively, place melted chocolate into a Ziploc bag, seal, and snip a corner to pipe faces.
  9. Serve immediately.

Notes

Ensure milk is at room temperature to prevent butter from clumping. Break up all batter clumps to avoid clogging the squeeze bottle. Draw designs quickly and cook at a low temperature for even cooking. Keep the squeeze bottle tip close to the griddle for better control.
