Ingredients

For the Dough
  • 1 package active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1.25 cups warm water (110° to 115°)
  • 1/4 cup canola oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3.5 cups all-purpose flour (use 3-1/2 to 4 cups total)
For the Topping
  • 1 can (15 ounces) tomato sauce
  • 3 teaspoons dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 2 cups toppings of your choice (like sliced pepperoni, cooked crumbled sausage, chopped onion, sliced mushrooms, chopped green pepper or sliced olives), optional
  • 2 cups shredded part-skim mozzarella cheese

Equipment

  • Large bowl
  • 12-in. pizza pan

Method

  1. In a large bowl, dissolve the yeast and sugar in the warm water. Let this mixture stand for 5 minutes.
  2. Add the oil and salt to the yeast mixture. Stir in the flour, 1 cup at a time, until you form a soft dough.
  3. Turn the dough onto a floured surface. Knead the dough until it is smooth and elastic, which takes about 2 to 3 minutes.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, turning it once to coat the top with grease. Cover the bowl and let the dough rise in a warm place until it doubles in size, about 45 minutes.
  5. Punch down the dough and divide it in half. Press each half into a greased 12-inch pizza pan.
  6. Combine the tomato sauce, oregano, and basil. Spread this sauce mixture over each crust. If you are using them, add your desired toppings now.
  7. Sprinkle the mozzarella cheese over the toppings. Bake at 400°F for 25 to 30 minutes, or until the crust is lightly browned.
