- Boil a large pot of salted water. Cook pasta until al dente according to package directions. Reserve 1 cup of pasta water before draining. Start the sauce while the pasta cooks.
- Heat butter, onion, and red pepper flakes (if using) in a large skillet over medium-high heat for 5-7 minutes, until the onion is translucent. Add tomatoes and garlic, cook for another 2-3 minutes until tomatoes soften.
- Reduce heat to medium. Pour in tomato sauce and heavy cream. Season with salt and pepper. Stir and simmer for about 5 minutes.
- Stir in parmesan cheese until melted. Add the cooked pasta and mix until the sauce coats it. Let the pasta simmer in the sauce for a couple of minutes. Add reserved pasta water, starting with ¼ cup, to thin the sauce as needed.
- Stir in fresh basil. Serve immediately, garnished with extra parmesan cheese and fresh basil.

Notes
This recipe is adaptable for gluten-free diets by using your favorite gluten-free pasta. The creaminess comes from the heavy cream and parmesan, creating a rich sauce that coats the pasta beautifully.
