Cheeseburger Sloppy Joes (Kid‑Approved, Faster Than Takeout)

Ingredients
  

For the Sloppy Joe Mixture
  • 1 pound ground beef (96/4) or turkey 12 ounces meatless soy crumbles also works
  • 1 small yellow onion diced
  • 2 garlic cloves minced
  • 4 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tbsp yellow mustard
  • 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 2/3 cup fat-free beef or veggie broth
  • 1 tsp cornstarch
  • 3 ounces reduced-fat sharp cheddar diced or shredded
  • to taste freshly ground pepper
For Serving
  • 6 brioche hamburger buns extra SPs/cals
  • regular burger toppings iceburg lettuce, pickles, tomatoes, etc.

Method
 

  1. Coat a large skillet with cooking spray. Sauté onions and garlic over medium heat until soft, about 4 minutes.
  2. Add your protein of choice. Cook, breaking it up, until browned and cooked through.
  3. In a small cup, mix the beef broth, cornstarch, ketchup, mustard, and Worcestershire sauce. Pour this mixture into the skillet.
  4. Simmer, mixing often, until the meat mixture has reduced slightly, about 3 minutes.
  5. Lower the heat and add the cheese. Stir until the cheese has melted through, about 4 minutes. Season with black pepper and kosher salt, to taste.
  6. Serve on toasted brioche buns with your favorite burger toppings.

Notes

This recipe is naturally gluten-free if you use gluten-free buns and Worcestershire sauce. It's a versatile base that can be customized with different proteins and toppings to suit your family's preferences.
